Summary:
This project taught me that chemistry is used daily; whether it's in shampoo, toothpaste, bleach, or medicine. The compounds that compose each product are taken straight from the Periodic Table of the Elements and are fused with other elements to create different types of products with specific purposes. When I was doing research, many of the reasons why each compound was used in that product began to make sense. For example, acetaminophen is one of the main ingredients in Vicks NyQuil and is used to relieve pain and reduce fevers. NyQuil is used to help someone with the flu or a cold to sleep, so it makes sense that acetaminophen would be an ingredient. Another thing that stuck out to me in this project was reading about the compounds that are in my Special K Red Berries cereal. I was expecting to have vitamins be a part of the ingredients, but when I researched the different vitamins and their purposes I was surprised to discover what I was really eating. I enjoyed this project because it helped me learn about the ingredients that make up the products I use on a daily basis.
